The Public Media Venture Group (PMVG) is a consortium of public stations focused on developing innovative ventures that contribute to growth in revenue and service impact for public media. PMVG stations are diverse. Our venture group includes the largest stations in public television and the smallest, serving entire states, individual cities, and even small towns. Within this diversity, the characteristic that defines and unites PMVG member stations is leadership—PMVG leaders are passionate about their communities and proactive about serving them. They share a commitment to innovation and experimentation. They not only recognize that new technology is changing the nature of television, but they also embrace that technology to better meet local community needs.
In collaboration with our stations and partner organizations, PMVG focuses on technologies that enhance public media content, broaden access, and create a foundation for smart, agile, and efficient multi-platform service. We are developing new models for delivering public service through traditional broadcast, streaming and on-demand platforms, and online publishing of content. We are helping stations expand local journalism as legacy local news operations shrink and increase their organizational capability as the need for station services increases. Achieving financial security, securing a future workforce, and working collectively to achieve scale are all priorities for our venture group.
A key tactic is our group’s support of networking and educational opportunities. An example of this is the annual technology conference we will hold for all of public media and interested industry representatives on April 11-12, just before the 2024 NAB Show in Las Vegas. Public Media TechConnect is open to everyone in the media industry, so please consider joining us for TechConnect ’24. The preliminary program has been developed by some of the industry’s most respected leaders and will include over-the-air and online content delivery optimization, IP- and cloud-based facility design, cybersecurity, technical staffing, NextGen TV, new business and service opportunities for public media, and more. If you work in public media, TechConnect will give you the latest technical information you need to be effective. If you work in commercial media or an allied industry, TechConnect will give you the chance to learn about and, well, connect with people and stations in public media who are passionate about media and public service. We hope to see you there!
