In these early days of ATSC 3.0, select commercial broadcasters are testing the technology and the business models through two main consortia of commercial broadcasters: Spectrum Co and Pearl TV.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai VISITED Phoenix late last month, meeting with broadcasters and consumer electronics companies behind the Phoenix Model Market, the groundbreaking Next Gen TV launchpad that signed “on the air” with its first ATSC 3.0 station just before the NAB Show.

South Korea literally paved the Road to ATSC 3.0, adopting its Next Gen TV standard in 2016 and launching 4K UHD ATSC 3.0 broadcasts in May 2017. Momentum continues to build since the landmark UHD broadcasts this year of the Winter Olympics and World Cup – Korean consumers are beginning to embrace Next Gen TV powered by ATSC 3.0.

In the Chat Room this month, THE STANDARD sat down with former ATSC Board Chairman Glenn Reitmeier, who was just volunteered to lead the new ATSC Planning Team on Future Video Technologies. The Senior Vice President at NBC Universal has been heavily involved in digital television since its inception, from his days at Sarnoff during the ATSC 1.0 development days a generation ago.

Since HDTV pioneer and ATSC Director Emeritus Joseph Flaherty passed away last month at age 87, the tributes have been pouring in. Flaherty, credited with co-founding the ATSC 35 years ago, led the planning committee on Dick Wiley’s FCC Advisory Committee on Advanced Television Service, and was a global ambassador for HDTV, among many other accomplishments in his storied career.

Fall is in the air, and ATSC 3.0 is on the air. With a particularly busy summer behind us, the ATSC and its members look forward to technology, specialist and ad hoc group meetings this month. Among other events, industry professionals are going “back to school,” in the first of a series of SBE and IEEE BTS educational activities related to ATSC 3.0. September conference calls, events and dates of interest to ATSC members, industry colleagues and key stakeholders.

Merrill Weiss’ primary work on ATSC 3.0 has been on the Physical and Applications layers, and he currently chairs a Small Group on the Scheduler/Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) of the Specialist Group on the Physical Layer (S32).

In July and August, we continue our summertime road trip along the Road to ATSC 3.0. For the ATSC and our members, this expressway has two parallel fast lanes: A) ongoing standards work to further enhance Next Gen TV, and B) support for broadcaster and manufacturer implementations of Next Gen TV powered by ATSC 3.0.

The Advanced Television Systems Committee, Inc., is an international, non-profit organization developing voluntary standards and recommended practices for digital terrestrial broadcasting. ATSC member organizations represent the broadcast, broadcast equipment, motion picture, consumer electronics, computer, cable, satellite, and semiconductor industries. ATSC also develops digital terrestrial broadcasting implementation strategies and supports educational activities on ATSC standards.
