More than 40 exhibitors showcasing ATSC 3.0 products and services at the 2018 NAB Show signaled the arrival of the new broadcast standard designed to seamlessly meld over-the-air with over-the-top content. Next-generation television was the talk of the show. And the epicenter of activity was the “Road to ATSC 3.0” exhibit in the Central Lobby, co-hosted by ATSC, CTA and NAB and sponsored by Pearl TV, Sinclair Broadcast Group, LG Electronics, Dolby, Sony, the AWARN Alliance and others. It highlighted ATSC 3.0 implementation plans across the United States – Phoenix, Dallas, Cleveland, Raleigh, Portland, Las Vegas, Washington, Baltimore and East Lansing – and deployments in South Korea.

In the Chat Room this month, THE STANDARD sat down with Dr. Richard Chernock, who is stepping down in May from his chairmanship, and we might add very able stewardship, of the TG3 Technology Group that developed ATSC 3.0. He’s also retiring in June as Chief Science Officer at Triveni Digital.

Our tentpole event this month is the 2018 ATSC Television Broadcast Conference, May 23-24 in Washington. Registration is now open. Building on the theme of Next Gen TV activities from last month’s 2018 NAB Show, the “Road to ATSC 3.0 – Destination Next Gen TV” conference begins with lunch on Wednesday, May 23, followed by reports on early ATSC 3.0 deployments in cities across the United States.

ATSC Board Chairman Richard Friedel of Fox received the Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) at the 69th Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards during the 2018 NAB Show. Long-time ATSC participant Bob Ross of CBS also was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Emmy.

Now that the ATSC 3.0 standard is finalized and South Korean broadcasters gave the next-generation system its inaugural run at the recently concluded 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, what’s next? Now, planning and testing in the U.S. is underway, with select broadcasters and industry participants refining their strategies for technical, structural and business plans. Some trials—in Phoenix, Arizona and Dallas, Texas—are being readied for just that.

ATSC 3.0 and its advanced emergency alerting capabilities are going global thanks to a landmark memorandum of understanding (MOU), signed at the NAB Show by the AWARN Alliance, NAB and RAPA (the trade association that represents Korean broadcasters, equipment manufacturers and researchers).

As broadcasters packed their bags for the NAB Show in Las Vegas to see the latest technology and discuss their industry’s future, stations in two of the country’s biggest markets were set to begin broadcasting with the new ATSC 3.0 broadcast standard.
