THE STANDARD asked Board members for their ATSC New Year’s resolutions and wishes. Not surprisingly, they’re singing off the same song sheet – looking ahead with great anticipation to what promises to be pivotal year for the next-gen television broadcast standard.

CES, which is expected to attract nearly 180,000 attendees during its Jan. 6 to 9 run at the Las Vegas Convention Center and surrounding environs, will be a conundrum filled with contradictions. This is the first major event since the sponsoring organization swapped “technology” for “electronics” as its middle name (now the Consumer Technology Association or CTA) in November and opted to label this event “CES” rather than the “International Consumer Electronics Show” of yore.

The ATSC is now gathering participants interested in demonstrating or sponsoring an ATSC 3.0 Consumer Showcase, highlighting specific over-the-air improvements that viewers will soon enjoy. In addition, the NAB Futures Park has dedicated a portion of its space on the exhibit floor to ATSC 3.0 Workflow Demonstrations.

The Advanced Television Systems Committee, Inc., is an international, non-profit organization developing voluntary standards and recommended practices for digital terrestrial broadcasting. ATSC member organizations represent the broadcast, broadcast equipment, motion picture, consumer electronics, computer, cable, satellite, and semiconductor industries. ATSC also develops digital terrestrial broadcasting implementation strategies and supports educational activities on ATSC standards.
