February is chock full of ATSC activities. One highlight is the half-day workshop on ATSC 3.0 hosted by the Hollywood Professional Association, kicking off its annual HPA Tech Retreat on Presidents’ Day, Feb. 20 in Indian Wells, Calif. , a suburb of Palm Springs.
Chaired by Madeleine Noland of LG Electronics, who chairs the ASTC’s S34 and S33-3 specialist groups, this session will explore new possibilities that ATSC 3.0 will provide in video, audio, interactivity and more. Here’s the agenda:
1:00 p.m. – ATSC 3.0 Overview
Explains details of the ATSC 3.0 system that impact content production, distribution, reception and rendering.
1:35 p.m. – Distribution and Display Ecosystem
Explores the television distribution ecosystem that Next Gen content will exist in, and new consumer technologies for end users.
2:35 p.m. – Break
2:50 p.m. – Interactivity
Addresses how content providers can enhance their product to provide a more engaging and personalized experience for the consumer.
3:50 p.m. – Next-gen Content Production: Feeding the ATSC 3.0 Ecosystem
Considers what needs to happen upstream in the Next Gen TV ecosystem for ATSC 3.0 to be successful.
4:50 p.m. – Wrap-up
Presenters and panelists will include: Winston Caldwell, Fox; Mark Corl, Triveni Digital; Guy Hadland, Unisoft; Steve Koenig, Consumer Technology Association; Azita Manson, OpenZnet, representing PILOT; Skip Pizzi, NAB; Dave Siegler, Cox Media Group; John Taylor, LG; and Joe Winograd, Verance, among others. They’ll discuss the complex Next Gen TV distribution ecosystem that content must traverse, and the technologies that will bring the content to life in consumers’ homes.

The Advanced Television Systems Committee, Inc., is an international, non-profit organization developing voluntary standards and recommended practices for digital terrestrial broadcasting. ATSC member organizations represent the broadcast, broadcast equipment, motion picture, consumer electronics, computer, cable, satellite, and semiconductor industries. ATSC also develops digital terrestrial broadcasting implementation strategies and supports educational activities on ATSC standards.
